As I was browsing through the November/December issue of Departures magazine, a photograph leapt off the page. It was a Richard Avedon image of Dorian Leigh. I originally saw the photo at an Avedon Exhibition earlier this year and his work left an indelible imprint upon my memory. The article in Departures is about the auction at Christie’s Paris on November 20. The Richard Avedon Foundation sees the auction as an opportunity to introduce the public to the Foundation and proceeds will be used to create an endowment fund to support the Foundation’s activities, which include philanthropy in support of photography and photographic education.
I encourage you to experience Avedon when his photography is in town. Currently, there is a Richard Avedon Exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston until January 16, 2011. Here are a few museums that include the photography of Richard Avedon in their collection:
On my wish list is a hardcover copy of Richard Avedon’s 1964 out of print book, “Nothing Personal” – a collaboration with writer James Baldwin.
did you know…Richard Avedon was the inspiration for Fred Astaire’s character, Dick Avery, in the movie Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn …
